A "Must Have" Yoga Book

...At last, the mystery of how to pronounce sanskrit terms properly has been revealed. Have you been looking for an English / sanskrit cross reference? Are the exact pronunciations of sanskrit terms still a mystery? Would you like to learn a lot more about sanskrit as it pertains to Yoga?

You dont have to search anymore. The Language of Yoga is an interactive book and double CD set written by Nicolai Bachman. This interactive course includes more than 200 asanas with illustrated yoga postures and 300 sanskrit definitions.

In between teaching yoga classes and writing, I have some time to read, and I was happy that I took the time to read Nicolai Bachmans 139 page cross reference book for converting sanskrit terms to English.

The two CDs that accompany the book make this work come to life. The first CD covers chants for yoga practice, yoga sutras, and Yoga terms. The second CD co...more

Kundalini yoga:

This type of yoga uses a system of meditative techniques and movements related to the concept of intensified life-energy-pranotthana-. Typically, Kundalini Yoga teachers use fast-paced and repetitive movements often coordinated with in-calls and response chanting.

The emphasis in Kundalini is on the breath in conjunction with physical movements which also gives special consideration to the role of the spine and the endocrine system due to the freeing of energy in the lower body and allowing it to move upwards.

bikram Yoga:

Known as Hot Yoga, this discipline is designed for a sequence of 26 asana yoga postures and 2 breathing exercises that are performed in a heated room between 95 - 100 degrees Fahrenheit (35 - 40 degrees Celsius).

As I have seen, this type of yoga demands the repetition and holding of each posture for a certain time accompanied by the breath of fire to warm and stretch muscles whilst oxygenating each organ an fiber for a healthy temple (body).more

Yoga for Life: Vinyasa flow

...tly fluctuate, as do our physical, emotional, and spiritual states. Then we are ready to build power, take determined action, and tack with the wind as conditions change. If we get it together we are in for a fabulous ride!

At the heart of this approach is the deep honoring and attention paid to the individual. Although Iyengar, bikram and Jois all came to develop their own brand of yoga, the notion that any specific yoga prescription can be given to any person is deeply counter to the teachings of Krishnamacharya. He stated that the most important thing to remember about a yogic practice is that Yoga should be adapted to the individual, not the individual to the yoga.

Yoga and Learning Disabilities

... How Yoga Helps
The treatment of a learning disability can vary from person to person. Different disabilities require different treatment options and even then, therapy must be determined on an individual basis: what works for one person with dyslexia may not work for another. However, yoga, because it does not focus on the disability but the person, can benefit a variety of people with a variety of learning problems.

Self Esteem: Self esteem can be a hard thing for some people to obtain, particularly when that person feels as though they have something wrong with them. Yoga is a vehicle of self-awareness, self-realization, and self-acceptance, three things that work together to increase a person's sense of self, ultimately solidifying their self esteem.

People who do yoga feel better about themselves and the world around them. They become motivated, better able to tackle the hardships a learning disability, or any kind of disability, can bring. Yoga also helps them gain acceptance of their disability, accepting that they have it and learning what can help minimize the effects of it. Yoga also provides time for self-reflection, helping students to become less influenced by their negative capacities and more influenced by their positive ones.

Conscious Breathing: If there is one function that can help just about anything, it's probably the act of conscious breathing. Breathing helps a person on innumerable levels. From increasing circulation to pro...more
